The J3400 12.1" wide screen display delivers a natural image with the highest outdoor brightness available, high contrast ratio and minimal color shift. View Anywhere® Technology

The View Anywhere display uses a proprietary optical enhancement process based on technology initially developed for high-end military aviation and marine applications. The View Anywhere display adjusts quickly from your office or home work environment and accommodates a variety of outdoor work scenarios. This innovative solution was designed for mobile users that use Tablet PCs in bright light environments.

The glossy Gateway notebook screen is surprisingly strong, but begins reflecting the background to the extent where it becomes difficult to see what is on the display. The Motion J3400 display doesn't show any reflections at all and remains perfectly
viewable and readable.

When moved into broad daylight, but not directly facing the sun, the Motion J3400 display remains unaffected and completely readable. The anti-glare coating of the Toshiba M700 turns the display somewhat milky and harder to read.

In direct sunlight, the bright vibrancy observed on both displays in the shade is gone, but the Motion remains sharp and readable. It now looks more like a transflective or reflective display. That's because the Hydis AFFS+ LCD has a reflective area as well as a transmissive one.

From an extreme angle, the anti-glare of the Toshiba screen very effectively eliminates mirror reflections, but it also makes the display milky and unreadable. The Motion display is virtually unaffected.

What is Rugged?

The rugged J3400 was designed and tested with field professionals in service, sales, government and healthcare in mind who need a robust device without the extra weight associated with traditional fully rugged devices. The J3400 has been drop tested in accordance with MIL-STD-810F specifications at 3 feet for accidental drops that may happen while in the field.

The J3400 is also water, dust and splash resistant where field conditions are regularly dusty, windy and rain showers. The J3400 is IP52 rated, meaning it is suitable for use in dusty environments and is splash resistant to water, so it could, for example, withstand a rain shower. See J3400 Rugged Testing Results

J3400 Drop Tests

The drop tests performed on the J3400 were from a height of 36 inches onto plywood over concrete while the tablet PC was operating. The systems were dropped on 10 sides. All J3400 Tablet PCs tested were operational with no damage to the displays or hard drives.

Motion J3400 - Rugged, Field-Ready Tested

The rugged J3400 is designed and tested for real-world, field-ready conditions. The J3400 has been rigorously tested to conditions field workers may occasionally face such as bumps, drops or the exposure to wind, heat and rain. The following shows the types of tests that the Motion J3400 has passed in order to meet or exceed compliance for MIL-STD-810F, IP52 and other durability ratings.

Test Type	Description
Drop	Motions drop test was performed in accordance with MIL-STD-810F. The Motion systems were dropped a total of 26 times while operating from a height of 36 inches onto plywood over concrete.
Vibration	Motions vibration test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-6. We conducted both operational and non-operational tests. Operational: 9G, 10-500Hz Non-Operational: 1.3G, 10-500Hz
Water Resistance	The water resistance test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60529 IP52.
Humidity	The operational humidity test was performed over a range of temperatures, humidity levels and times. The table below summarizes the test modes: Operational: 0% to 90% without condensation Storage: 0% to 90% without condensation
Dust Resistance	The dust resistance test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60529 IP52. The number five is defined as “dust protected”. This means that the ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
High Temperature	The operational temperature test was performed in accordance with IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC60068-2-2. This included a temperature range from 5°C to 45°C for three cycles over a 24 hour period. Operational: +5°C to +45°C (+41°F to +113°F) The storage temperature test was conducted across the following range of temperatures: Storage: -20°C to +60°C (-4°F to 140°)
Thermal Shock	The operational thermal shock test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-14. The non operational thermal shock test was conducted as follows: -30C/2 hrs, 60C/2hrs for 12 Testing Cycles
Altitude	The operational altitude test was performed at 10,000 feet at 5°C for 12 hours and 40°C for 30 minutes.

A solid state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses non-volatile memory (NAND) such as flash or volatile memory such as SDRAM to store data instead of the spinning platters found in conventional hard disk drives (HDD). Advantages of SSD:

• Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
• Faster read time In some cases, two times or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
• Faster random I/O than conventional disks.
• Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk
• Faster boot and application launch time results in faster read and seek time but only if applications already reside in flash and are dependent on read speed more than other issues, e.g. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks and reads.
• Few to no mechanical parts
  • Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts result in less power consumption.
  • No noise: lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
  • Better mechanical reliability: lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures which apply to tablet PCs and other mobile devices when transported.
• Security - allowing a very quick "wipe" of all data stored.
• Deterministic performance - unlike mechanical hard drives, performance of SSDs is constant and deterministic across the entire storage. "Seek" time is constant and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up.

The J3400 Tablet PC mobile broadband option features Gobi™ mobile broadband technology – configured for GSM open SIM – enables high speed connectivity to all 3G and legacy 2G networks worldwide with a single embedded device.

The integrated 2.0-megapixel camera in the F5 can be utilized for a variety of purposes, some of which include: Site documentation Inspections Structural documentation Components or parts for repairs Vehicle repair documentation Real estate appraisals Technology Definition 1.0-MP equates to one-million pixels, which is a unit of measurement in an image (the number of megapixels). A higher number of megapixels will determine the quality of the image. Think of it as the number of color dots that comprise a picture. A low density of dots will result in a poor image. A higher density of dots will result in a higher quality image.

Motions Integration of the Technology
The Motion J3400 includes an integrated 2.0-megapixel camera that can be used for work site documentation, system components and repair parts, structural documentation of commercial sites, building code inspection documentation, vehicle repair documentation and real estate appraisals.

Camera Specifications

At the request of many customers and partners, Motion has added a smart card reader as an optional feature on the Motion J3400 Tablet PC. Security has become a priority for many companies and there is an ongoing need to find ways to protect assets from security attacks on corporate systems and confidential data. Smart card technology is often used in applications or environments which require strong security protection and authentication. Motion brings that extra level of security protection to the J3400 with an integrated the smart card reader.

The integrated smart card reader is a standard feature on all configurable J3400 Tablet PC systems.

The J3400 tablet PC includes a smart card reader located on the right side of the tablet, under the card slots cover, next to the pen bay. Using smart card software, this device can read information from and write information to the smart card when the card is inserted into the slot. The smart card is an ISO 7816 PC/SC compliant, contact type smart card reader/writer.
