What is Rugged?

The sealed F5 has been rigorously tested for conditions field workers may occasionally face such as bumps, drops or exposure to wind, heat and rain. The F5 is IP54 rated, meaning it is suitable for use in dusty environments and is resistant to water, so it could, for example, withstand a rain shower. The Motion F5 has also been extensively drop tested in accordance with MIL-STD-810F specifications. See the RuggedPCReview (PDF)

Motion has included a three-year warranty that protects against incidents that can occur in the field. The warranty leads the industry in protection for durable PCs, covering damage from short drops (approx. 30 inches) or exposure to rain and dust. Motion also offers an optional Display Protection Plan (DPP) that provides accidental coverage for damage to the F5 display.

There is no need to pay more for Fully-Rugged.

The ergonomic, lightweight design of the rugged Motion F5 protects against environmental conditions and accidental situations without the high price associated with other fully rugged PCs.
The F5 ranges from $2600 - $4000, depending on configuration. This is a significantly lower price point than that of other fully-rugged PCs with prices starting at nearly $1000 more.

The F5 strikes the perfect balance of price, durability, mobility and feature integration.

• Handhelds are too small, difficult to use and have minimal application support.
• Consumer Notebooks/Convertibles lack durability, have no integration of necessary devices (RFID/Camera/Barcode) and are difficult to use for mobile professionals in the field.
• Ruggedized Notebooks/Convertibles are very heavy, very expensive, have no integration of necessary devices and are also difficult to use in the field.

Field-Ready Tested

The rugged F5 is designed and tested for real-world, field-ready conditions. The F5 has been rigorously tested to conditions field workers may occasionally face such as bumps, drops or the exposure to wind, heat and rain. The following shows the types of tests that the Motion F5 has passed in order to meet or exceed compliance for IP54 and other durability ratings.

Test Type	Description
Drop	Motions drop test was performed in accordance with MIL-STD-810F. The Motion systems were dropped a total of 26 times while operating from a height of 36 inches onto plywood over concrete.
Vibration	Motions vibration test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-6. We conducted both operational and non-operational tests. Operational: 1.5G, 5-500Hz Non-Operational: 2.5G, 5-500Hz
Water Resistance	The water resistance test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60529 IP54. The number four is defined as splashing water. Water was sprayed against the unit from all directions with no harmful effects.
Humidity	The operational humidity test was performed over a range of temperatures, humidity levels and times. The table below summarizes the test modes: Operational: 20% to 85% without condensation Storage: 95% without condensation
Dust Resistance	The dust resistance test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60529 IP54. The number five is defined as dust protected. This means that the ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
High Temperature	The operational temperature test was performed in accordance with IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC60068-2-2. This included a temperature range from 5C to 40C for three cycles over a 24 hour period. Operational: +5C to +35C The storage temperature test was conducted across the following range of temperatures: Storage: -20C to +60C
Thermal Shock	The operational thermal shock test was conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-14. The non operational thermal shock test was conducted as follows: -30C/2 hrs, 60C/2hrs for 12 Testing Cycles
Altitude	The operational altitude test was performed at 10,000 feet at 5C for 12 hours and 40C for 12 hours. The non operational test was performed at 15,000 feet at -30C and all Motion systems passed without incident.

At the request of many customers and partners, Motion has added a smart card reader as an optional feature on the Motion F5  Tablet PC. Security has become a priority for many companies and there is an ongoing need to find ways to protect assets from security attacks on corporate systems and confidential data.

Smart card technology is often used in applications or environments which require strong security protection and authentication. Motion brings that extra level of security protection to the F5 with the smart card reader option.

A solid state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses non-volatile memory (NAND) such as flash or volatile memory such as SDRAM to store data instead of the spinning platters found in conventional hard disk drives (HDD). The technological advances in the SSD provide enhanced durability and performance as well as improved battery life. With up to 10% longer battery life and up to a 40% increase in data access efficiency, a Motion F5 Tablet PC with SSD provides an improved customer experience.

Providing protection against everyday knocks, bumps and jolts that occur during computing, Motion Tablet PCs with the SSD provide a robust, rugged alternative for data storage in specialized environments such as construction, field service, inspection, home health, aviation and transportation.

Advantages of SSD:

• Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
• Faster read time – In some cases, two times or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
• Faster random I/O than conventional disks.
• Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk
• Faster boot and application launch time results in faster read and seek time but only if applications already reside in flash and are dependent on read speed more than other issues, e.g. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks and reads.
• Few to no mechanical parts
  • Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts result in less power consumption.
  • No noise: lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
  • Better mechanical reliability: lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures which apply to tablet PCs and other mobile devices when transported.
